Passenger and Immigration Index gives a Charles Thompson with a date of 1879 California. No further information. It just says "Source Bibliography: Santa Clara County. Californoia, 1890 GREAGreat Register.  Santa Clara, CA: Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogical Society, 1999. 151p. Page 135.

Also found a Charles Thomas Thompson born Islington 1857 - Middlesex. England with these parents in 1861  - Thomas Thompson 33  and Eugenia Thompson 32
Siblings Eliza Jane Thompson 8  Eugenia Eliz Thompson 6  Thersa Jane Thompson 2
Charles Thos Thompson 4   Thos Josph Thompson 5 Months

Cannot find him in 1871 yet but this seems to be the same parents with a Maranda born 1864  - Thomas Thompson 43  Eugenia Thompson 42
Thomas Thompson 10  Maranda Thompson 7 Annie Thompson 5
Emmeline Thompson 3  Frederick Thompson 5 Months old.

Perhaps you can confirm we have the correct family - not many Maranda around.

When I follow the mother from the 1871 UK Census - it is sending me to a Eugenie Jackson born November 1828 England in the household of a married daughter Miranda Halpin in Crockett, Contra Costa, California. Eugenie Jackson immigrated 1890 and Miranda 1884  ???

Guessing the mother has remarried to a Jackson - Can see a passenger list for a Eugenia Jackson born 1828 and aged 61 years from London.
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland  to New York, arriving 19 October 1889 on the Berlin. Going to Oregon.
Also travelling Fred Jackson aged 61 years - hatter from London

A couple of tree entries showing up now - one with photographs - looks as if this is the right connection. Charles seems to have died 26 May 1907 Adel, Lake, Oregon. (Tragic circumstances) Charles seems to be in Nine. Placer. California in 1880. Looking at the 1900 the immigration date is given as 1877  ???

Hi Trevor  & Sandra,
You definately have the right family,  Eugenia did go to Oregon then back to California,  I have Charles death, it would not have been very pleasant for him,,,    I did not know when Charles or Maranda  went to the States  or what became of Fred Jackson,  the other mystery is that Maranda  (1st marriage)  married a Mr Potter, & am presuming it must have been in the States,  but can find nothing on this either, but they had a daughter,  many thanks

Did notice a step-son living with Maranda and August in 1910 - Walter Thompson Gunderson  ???

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MV2X-WJF

Checking the 1900 again, August and Maranda had only been married 2 years.  So suspect this was the joining of 2 families, August and his daughter Annie and Miranda and her son Walter. The fact that she states she has had 2 children and 2 survive might not be totally true  ???  So perhaps it is a Gunderson husband needed for Maranda  ???

Unfortunately have not found a death record for Frederick Jackson which must have been between the arrival and 1900.  :(
