MEPSTEAD~New York~Florist ~1870 lookup Please
« on: Saturday 21 May 05 22:14 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,
I am trying to find Edward Mepstead's origins in England.
How and when he went to the US and the Florist occupation.

1880 gives Edward- aged 34- b/p England- Occp Florist- Fathers and Mothers b/p Eng.

It also gives his wife Euphemie- aged 32- b/p VT ?- HER MUM 'n DAD from Scottland.

The next household's family name is Scott also a florist.

1880 census place Buffalo, Erie, New York

Is this enough information.  :-\  Thanks  Lesanne.

Not sure if this would help but I did find the name Mepstead in the Kent area.

Here are two possibilities from the civil registration:

Edward Stephen Mepstead, March 1847 District Medway, County Kent, Volume 5, page 409

Edward Isiah Mepstead, March 1846. District Easty, County Kent volume 5, page 159

I find the name in the 1861 and 1871 census but no in the US.

You may want to try finding a ship record.

Hi Nutkin,

Thanks for taking the time to look.
I am particularly interested in the florist bit.

Would you know how I can access the trade  directories for Buffalo?

   Thanks again.   :D    Lesanne.

Here is the link for the Buffalo and Erie County historical society.  Have been there before and it is a great facility.  They have copies of the city directories.

Hello

you must be getting tired of me. Anyway here is this passenger record for an Edward Mepsted in 1868 who is 22  so in 1880 he would be 34 (same age as your Edward) and he is also with a couple of people by the surname Scott (same as your Edward) but he is listed as from Scotland. It also says he was planning on going to Canada.

this might be him
