sorry, nearly missed your question, there. If you're using a certain well known site, they have been transcribed as Barnell. If you use the 'old search' and go to England 1851, there are boxes at the bottom where you can put in the reference numbers.

you are fantastic!  yes, it's sailors all the way (both merchant and royal navies) in our family... I never realised quite how far back this went though!

The date of 1842 would correspond to the Barnett's return from Ascension Island too, so Jane Ann would have been about 7 when she returned.

yes, but unfortunately it means that he is not my great, great grandfather though, as he was not Isabella's father and she was my great grandmother...I have no idea how I would find out who Isabella's father was :-(

found it, thanks!  not sure where he married Sarah though.  Would it be usual for wives to go on the posting to Ascension Island I wonder, (i.e. did they marry before and leave together?) or did they meet on Ascension and get married there?  Interesting...

ah, now, that's the question. Could have been either, I'll have a hunt around. Meanwhile, Jane Ann's marriage is on the Cityark - 17/2/1856
jpeg90477 Chatham St Mary.

There's this one in the right location

ok thanks, llooks as though it could be the right one.  So they got married in 1822 after he joined the navy (1820) but obviously before they left for Ascension Island.  Can we find out which ship they went on (and when!)?

doesn't look like it was the pleasantest of postings

http://www.geocities.com/layedwyer/AscensionIsland.htm

There's a reference to 'a few white women'. I suspect Sarah will have gone out already married. This site mentions the Royal Marines garrison starting in 1823, so perhaps they were there from the start.

Think you'll need his record that crimea1854 posted to know when & how he travelled. A copy of the parish marriage might help to be certain it's the correct couple, it may mention Royal Marines.
