Look up for 1871 census, please
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 14:06 BST (UK) »
I have CHARLES COOMBS (COMBS, COOMBES) born1822 Bristol, Glos and wife ANN COLEMAN born Bristol, circa 1822.
They married in Bristol in 1841.  On the 1861 census they Christchurch, Monmouthshire, Wales and by 1881 they are in Leckwith Glamorgan, Wales.
Charles is a Brickmaker and it seems they went to Wales around 1850  I have all the censuses except the 1871.  Please can anyone find them?
Thank you,
Abiam2

sorry.  searched for a combination of Charles, Ann and youngest children Henry (17), William (16) and Thomas (13) to no avail.  I noticed that Thomas was living next door in the 1881 census aged 21 with his wife so it is odd.

Just a thought ,,,,, wonder if the surname has been mistranscribed/mis-spelled  with an 'L' instead of  a 'C' (or another letter)

It sometimes pays off to be flexible/ poetic ::) - I was looking for some Bevans in the 1911 - just could not find them. Sometime later I was looking for another person & found my missing Bevans recorded in this household as 'Bean'

My eyes are tired now - but I can give it a bash & look later on.

Thank you all for your advice and thoughts.  I will certainly try changing the C for an L and any other similar type letter.  Also emigration and return is another possibility.
Will let you know should I get lucky.  I feel luck will play an important role here!
Thanks again,

Hello - have sat here trawling through the 1871 census and I can;t see any of them ! Yet have found them as you said in wales 1851 , 1861, 1881 and 1891.  The only one I may have found in 1871 is Ann (the daughter) in Devises as a servant.  Even tried searching for the first names with year and place of birth but still nothing

I have looked at both major sites I have found usually that if I can;t find them onone = they will be on the other and will be on the first

have you noticed that there is a James Coombs aged 25 son in the 1891 census born Newport with them in 1891.

I wonder if there are some missing sections of the 1871 for some of those areas; I would suggest another post on both this board and the Monmouthshire board to ask if anyone knows if there are.

Sorry couldn;t help
Nesta

Nesta, thanks for your thoughts.

In 1871 Charles and Ann should have had a t least 3 young children living with them.

Edwin       B 1862  Where?
Charlotte  B 1866 CARDIFF
James      B 1867 Newport

Edwin          no record for Edwin.
Charlotte     born Cardiff no record on FBMD
James         Record found B. Q3 1865 Newport Monmouthshire  (There are 3 Thomas')

These children should be with their parents!

I have posted a message about possible missing census pages on th M'mouthshire board and will put a new one here as you suggest
