Kellaghan / McGeough in Ferney and Tamlet
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 16:17 BST (UK) »
My GGG grandparents were:

James Kellaghan (1798-1880) originally from Ferney, County Monaghan, and
Margaret McGeough Kellaghan (1810-1870) originally from Tamlet, County Monaghan.

Can anyone tell me more about Ferney and Tamlet?

I believe my GGG grandparents were Catholic.  Does anyone know the names of any of the older parishes that might have marriage records?

Thanks in advance for any information.

There are 4 townlands in Co Monaghan named Tamlat. All are between 100 and 200 acres in size. One each in the following civil parishes: Errigal Trough, Monaghan, Tehallan & Aghnamullen. Any idea which your family came from?

Can’t see a townland called Ferney. There is a barony called Farney which covers quite a large part of Co Monaghan. Not sure if that’s the place referred to. Usually people gave either their townland or their parish as their home address, not a barony.

You can see what RC records exist for each of the parishes on this site:

Note that the RC parish for Tehallan is called Tyholland.

Many thanks Elwyn,

I found these placenames on a transcription of their grave markers in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, America.  Sounds like Farney is the same as Ferney.  Unfortunately, not sure what the proper townlands are.

A friend online suggests that James is the brother of Father Francis Keelaghan (1804-1882), the priest who founded the Church of Immaculate Conception in Bonduran, County Donegal.

You could e-mail the parish in Bundoran and see what they know of Fr Keelaghan's origins:
