 Oletta,

I had no success looking for her Death Notices in editions of the Newcastle Journal
( The Journal has smaller traffic on BMDs than the Chronicle)

You say Elizabeth died on 13th March 1989.  Ancestry BMDs has it that her death was registered in April
  1989?

Civil cemeteries in Northumberland are now administered by Northumberland County Council
(Not long ago each relevant Local Authority looked after it's "own" cemeteries.)

 Web page
 http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=3375
shows the civil cemeteries management under the relevant departments.

I spoke with a Jennifer in the Cowpen office. I learned that now the County Council charge a fee of £45 for searching for place of burial/cremation ( And you thought Newcastle Library's £30 was a bit steep ! )

However because I asked her to restrict the search to those cems in near proximity of Blyth i.e. Blyth Links Cem  (less than 2 miles from Broadway, Blyth), Cowpen Cem and Cowpen Crematorium (both in same complex) about mile and a half from Broadway. She kindly threw in another freebee with Mayfield Cem, Cramlington ( about 7 miles from Broadway)  No record of a burial or cremation for Elizabeth Roper in any of these venues at the relevant time !

Do you know the religious denomination of Elizabeth ?

Hello Michael

Thank you very much for looking for the death notice for Elizabeth Roper, I have mis-read writing on death certificate it is actually the 30 March 1989.

As for religion I can only assume she was church of England

Kind regards

Oletta

If she didn't die until 30th March then I need to look at the Blyth paper a week or two after where I looked before.

I'm not sure when that will be - possibly next week as this coming week is a bit busy.

Christine

 Oletta,
And I'll answer your question before you ask it.

Yes I carefully checked and rechecked the place names
appearing in this Death Notice.. i.e. Blyth, Cramlington
 and Bellingham .

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

 Evening Chronicle
Monday, 3rd April 1989

Page 2, Death Notices.

 " ROPER (Blyth)
18 Broadway Crescent ( late of Seaview Villas, Cramlington)
Suddenly at home, on March 30th, Elizabeth (Nee Murray)
dearly beloved wife of the late John Robert Roper,
much loved mother of Iris and Alastair, and mother in law
 of Jeanette and Alan.

Funeral Service to be held in St Nicholas Church, Cramlington
Village on Wednesday, April 5th at 1 p.m.  Followed by interment
in Bellingham Cemetery at 3 p.m.
Friends please meet at the church.                     "

-----------------------------------------------------------

Distance from Cramlington to Bellingham. about 35 miles.

maybe Christine C-side can ascertain if Blyth reporters published
the same details or something different ?

I'll certainly have a look.

I can see the point of having the ceremony in Cramlington if she had lived there for many years and only recently come to Blyth but the only reason I can think for her burial in Bellingham is that her family originated from there.

Hopefully all will be revealed eventually

I remembered that Woodhorn had original copies of the local paper so I checked while I was there.  Nothing mentioned but I suppose it makes sense to use a more widely read paper bearing in mind the wide area the information had to cover.

I can, however, confirm that she was buried in Bellingham - not in the churchyard but at the civil cemetery.

Entry no. 1549:  5th April 1989:  Elizabeth Roper, Widow, aged 84 years:  death occurred at 18 Broadway Crescent, Blyth:  Grave no. 157 C of E:  Brought from Blyth

The register of graves was also there and under 157 it records that the casket of ashes for John Robert Roper is also buried there cross-referenced to entry no. 1407.  Also stated ‘Headstone erected, permission granted’.

Back to the burial records - no. 1407 - John Robert Roper, ashes buried on 29th May 1979, aged 75 years:  death occurred in Hadrian Hospital, Wallsend:  Brought from Borough of Blyth.  There was no ceremony but I expect that this took place at a crematorium - possibly Cowpen.

Included on this microfilm was a cemetery plan so I can also tell you where plot 157 is - if you ever need to know!
