COMPLETED Edward James MARTIN marriage
« on: Tuesday 12 June 12 13:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, I hoipe I am posting on the right board as it may be that the marriage took place in Essex, just not sure. I would like to find the marriage of Edward James Martin born C 1856/9, so that I could get the cert and travel back further.

My mother was born at 19 Young St, West Ham and that is how I know I have the right person. I have:

1891 - Edward MARTIN,1858, Shoreditch. Wife Helena 1869, Port Natal, South Africa. Children Sarah 2 and Edward 4 months. Both born Custom House. Living Alwick Rd.

1901 - Edward J MARTIN, 1859, Shoreditch. Wife Eleanor E, 1869 Africa. Children Sarah G, Edward F, Eleanor E, Susannah A, Charlotte C and Jane K. All born Custom House. Living 19 Young Street.

1911 - Edward MARTIN, 1856, Hoxton. Wife  Hellena (again) 1869 Port Natal, Africa. Children Eleanor, Susannah, Charlotte, Jane, William, Norah (my grandmother) and Thomas, all born West Ham. Again living 19 Young Street.

There are a few possible Edwards in the 1881 census but none I can count on. One being a Looking Glass fitter (Carver & Gilder) and another as a goldsmith being the best for where born and date but I have very great doubts for either of these as Edward spent his life from 1891 as a dock labourer or similar.

I would love to be able to trace this couple further back.

Hi,

Could Edward James Martin be Edward Joseph Martin?

The reason I ask is that there is a marriage of an Edward Joseph Martin in 1887, West Ham Vol 4a Page 6 and on the same page is an Eleanor Elizabeth Crouch.

1881 census -

Edward Crouch 43
Sarah H. Crouch 31
Eleanor Crouch 13 b. Port Natal, Africa
John Crouch 8
Sussanah Crouch 1

RG11/Piece: 464/Folio: 74/Page: 1

This looks like Edward's wife in 1881.

Oh gosh, you must be right.  The only thing is, on Norah's Marriage Certificate her father is down as Edward James, labourer. This would certainly make things easier. I had seen Edward Joseph but disregarded him because of the certificate.

Thank  you so much Tony and Jen. It takes a fresh brain to see the obvious, obviously!!!  I wonder why this paid kept changing their names. Edward James - def James on my grandmother's marriage cert and Eleanor obviously prefered Helena on the censuses. Thanks again
