Mary Ann Devote lookup please

my grandfather Walter was 4 in the 1901 Census but I have a record of May listed as dead in 1905!

There is a 1905 birth and death for a May Massarella  but no birth for a Walter Massarella in 1896/97

A Joseph Edwin Massarella was b Poole 1896 - mothers maiden name Devouto

Maybe it's a different Walter Massarella, but not sure - the 1901 England and Wales Census, shows Joseph and May Massarella (living on Green Road, Dorsetshire) with Walter Edwin Massarella DOB:  May 3, 1897 - I remember his birthday being May so pretty this is my grandfather.   I know that Joseph was actually Giuseppe and May Massarella was Mary Ann Devouta.  I'm new to this so maybe it's another family?

and the 1901 census shows that there was a son called Joseph Massarella who was 10!

The 1901 shows him only as Walter - not Walter Edwin-  and census records do not show any birthdate

I am sure it is the same family.  Joseph in 1901 was actually Emmanuel Joseph born 1891

This should clear things up - 2 death registrations.  One in his registered birth name and one in his "known by" name

Thank you that clears that up, nobody in the family knew who the Joseph was, but the person who did the registering has passed so no help from that end.

He married as Walter E in 1932 - not as Joseph E

And he was knows as Walter, his army records are Walter, his son never heard him be called Joseph - wonder how the mix up occurred, but probably one of those things we'll probably never know.
