Another Hexham lady for dating, please
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 17:21 BST (UK) »
Please can the experts out there give me some idea of a date for this photograph, please?

I do have full biographical information about McAllan - he was in fact better known for his landscape photography than portraits.

Is there any significance in the fact that she's holding a piece of paper - possibly a letter?

many thanks for any help you can give.

My guess is early 1880s based on the dress style. One of the other experts can likely narrow it more. ;) :)

Mid-late 1870's probably no later than 1877 as square cornered cardstock was replaced by rounded corners mid decade.
We often see people holding letters, they're a sort of thinking of you pose. This was probably sent to the sender.
