Wormingford wedding - Hammond 1856?
« on: Sunday 22 May 05 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hello

We are trying to find a marriage between a John HAMMOND, of Witham in Essex, and a woman from Wormingford called Ann in about 1857.  Ann gives Wormingford as her place of birth in the 1901 census and her date of birth was 1828 or 29 according to the census ages.

Many thanks

Chris and Richard

Hi Chris and Richard

As Witham and Wormingford are both in Essex, I am going to move your post over to the Essex Lookup Requests board for you.

Best Wishes
Rick :)

Hello Rick

I'm sorry about that but the information on the 1891 and 1901 censuses was that Wormingford is in Suffolk.

Hi Chris and Richard

No worries.

I have checked and Wormingford is not on my Suffolk parish list for 1891 or 1901, but it is on the Essex parish list.

Best Wishes
Rick :)

According to the parish index folder at Essex Record Office, the marriage records held by them for Wormingfold only go up to 1837.

However in Witham Essex RO ref; D/P 30/1/16 fiche 3 and 4 of 6 searched from page 84 (July 1847) to page 175 (Oct 1861) and found this marriage:

19 Feb 1853 Charles HAMMOND 37 widower labourer OTP father William HAMMOND married Mary Anne SMITH 25 spinster OTP father Isaac SMITH labourer.
Both made mark.
Witnesses: Joye* HAMMOND (made mark)
                   Hannah SMITH (made mark)
                   James MATWELL (?) (signed register)

No other HAMMONDs seen.

* that's what it looked like

Thank you very much.  Although you didn't find the John Hammond marriage you came up with that of another member of his family.

Strangely John's wife Ann gives Wormingfold as being in Suffolk in later censuses so perhaps they either married in Suffolk or somewhere else entirely.  They must be registered though - assuming they got married!

Thanks again for all your searching
