hi Red

sorry forgot to mention re 1841 it has been transcribe as Trafford but if you look at the original it is very faded and does look like Fulford

Surely not still working and that age?  And unusual to be still married at that age in 1851.

Many thanks

Since last post I have found a website on web@

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=gregdowson&id=I1237

"5.William Fulford (Esther Lake2, Arthur Lake1) was born 1803 in Kingsteighton Devon England, was christened 28 Aug 1803. He married Elizabeth Sweetland 29 Jul 1828 in Kingsteighton Devon England. She was born 1804 in Islington Devon England.   "

William was the son of Esther Lake and William Fulford.

"Esther Lake (Arthur Lake1) was born 1774 in Zeal Monchoran Devon UK. She married William Fulford 14 Feb 1798 in Kingsteighton Devon England. He was born 1772 in Kingsteighton Devon England. "

Esther was the daughter of Arthur Lake and Jane.

Can anyone find out any information about Arthur Lake and Jane in Zeal Monchoran? possibly married around 1770-4.

Can anyone find anything about William Fulford born 1772 in Kingsteighton?

Thank you.

Most of the information you found originally came from me. Happy to share anything more that I have although like you I am having trouble finding out any information re family prior to 1772-6 and William and Esther.  Have you progressed?

There seems to be a lot of people looking for william and esther but not everyone has the same information.

no. i have not found any more out.

I would like to know why the branch moved to Sheffield. i know the railways and poverty in the rural areas may have been a factor and people thought Sheffield was the place to make money.... Do you know why this family moved?

i think the only way to go back is to look at local records.

There are a couple of wiiliams in court... have you linked those to this family?

Thanks for replying. The information you found on Greg Dawson site was largely copied from a Graham Fuller who 'borrowed' all my information I shared with him re the other side of my family and then added some unsubstantiated information of his own (often wrong).  Anyway, my interest in Esther and William is through their son Arthur Lake Fulford who emigrated to NZ with wife and family and from where I am descended.   Their is another Fulford family in NZ and,I  think - no confirmation yet, are the link back to the Sheffield Fulfords. As you know it was William (1803) and his wife Elizabeth nee Sweetland and their family who moved up to Sheffield.

Like you  I am finding who William's (1772) parents are difficult.  I have gone through all the records at Devon while in England but nothing is clear. William was a mariner first and a school master in later years. The mariner issue is confirmed by a copy of the Trinity House Petition his wife Esther made while William was a prisoner in Longwy France - his ship The Swan having been captured during the Napoleonic Wars. He was a prisoner from 1805 to about 1814/15 - this explains the difference in age of Arthur Lake Fulford to those of his siblings Elizabeth, sally and William.

So anyone with any ideas on how to establish just who William's parents are, and similarly any more information on Esther and her original family? I'm not convinced the  family Shilo located under the name Trafford is the William we are looking at. Esther and William were clearly at Miray's Land Kingsteignton in 1841. Not far from them was a John Fulford and his family. This John being born abt 1786. So there may be a link there to explore.
