Hi

If you wanted to now more about Sylvester and Albert you could download their service records from the National Archives website (£3.50 each).

From their service numbers, taken from the WW1 medal roll, they look to have enlisted almost on the same day. Both were awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory medals. Sylvester's was sent to the Coastguard at Weymouth, which suggests to me that after leaving the navy he entered the CG Service. He also looks to have been awarded the RN Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1915 while on Excellent (the navy's gunnery school).

I have now found SG Applin's CG Service Record (ADM 175/82A pdf 76-77) this can be downloaded for free from the National Archives, but be warned it is a very large file. You will see from this that he was already serving in the CG at the outbreak of WW1.

It does contain some family information, such as the number of children, their sex and dates of birth, but no names. It also gives his wifes place of birth, but no other information.
