Baptism Lookup Please for a brickwall
« on: Saturday 16 June 12 11:17 BST (UK) »
Ann Eldred married Bernard Baine at Peterborough Cathedral in 1750. I know that BB was living in London at the time of his marriage so it is possible that Peterborough was AE's 'hometown'.

Her memorial says that she was 65 when she died in July 1789, this gives a birth around 1724.

I would really appreciate any help or guidance on this one.

Hi Edward ...

A search of the Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837) throws up some interesting facts.

Of the 18 ELDRED marriages on the index, 9 took place in Peterborough (St. John the Baptist) and a further 5 were in Maxey (approx. 5 miles north of Peterborough).  Unfortunately, the earliest of any of the ELDRED marriages on the indexes was in 1733.  It would therefore seem likely that your ELDREDs came from somewhere outside Northamptonshire.

The IGI has two possible baptisms for an Ann ELDRED - 1723 in Sempringham and 1724 in Spalding (both in Lincolnshire and less than 25 miles north of Peterborough).  Possibly worth further investigation?

Hope this may give you some further leads to follow!

Pennie, thanks for this

Do the marriage indexes cover the Cathedral, St John the Baptist & St Mary's in Peterborough?

Is there any chance that you could let me have the extracts from the indexes? Assuming that it doesn't break any copyright rules?

The 2 AE baptisms are 'on the radar' but the names of the fathers don't tie in with any of their 8 children. I know this doesn't eliminate them, it just doesn't make them that likely to be her.

Do you know of a baptism index for Peterborough?

tks again

The marriage index does not include the Cathedral, just St John the Baptist.
St Mary's is a modern parish (from abt 1860)

The Peterborough and District Family History Society may be able to help.

Thanks,

Are there any indexes for baptisms at the Cathedral or St John the Baptist?

I am not aware of any. We did not include the Soke of Peterborough parishes in our Northamptonshire baptism and burial indexes.

Tks again, however I see that Peterborough FHS have now released a CD of the Cathedral registers, I'll order this as it's easier & cheaper than driving to Northampton.

Unfortunately the Cathedral CD hasn't helped, however I manages to dive into the record office in Northampton today (between appointments) and had a quick look at some Peterborough wills and then the transcripts for Peterborough St John the Baptist.

Slightly further forwards, in that I now have her parents and paternal grandparents.

However, I would really appreciate details of any Eldred BMD's in Northamptonshire from anyone who has access to the cd's with the indexes.

I really don't mind buying them but as I think the next step is probably in Lincolnshire or Norfolk, it could just be a waste of money.

thanks

Hi Edward.

You would need to ask Alan Clarke about numerous names
from the Indexes on my links below this posting.

He will be sure to assist.  :)
