Heffernan Family
« on: Sunday 22 May 05 13:42 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out where my line of Heffernan's came from in Ireland.  They ended up in Canada around mid 1800's.  John Heffernan married Mary McGinn prior to coming to Canada.  Apparently there were 5 brothers, 2 came to Canada, 2 went to Austrailia and 1 went to the USA.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Karen

Dear Karen,
just thought I'd put my twopennyworth in:
the O Heffernan sept (Irish: O hIfearnain) originated in the Thomond (Irish: Tuathmhumhan), specifically in the barony of Inchquin, County Clare, but early on moved south to Owneybeg barony on the Limerick-Tipperary border, where the majority still dwell (still within the Thomond).
The meaning of the name appears to be unknown.
Regards, David

Hi David and Billiejo,

Thanks for that information.  Tipperary is in the lead right now, but will check for information in Co. Kildare.

I am starting to fear that I may never really know.

Hei Karen,

There were a number of Heffernans in Ireland between 1848 - 1864. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Hello Karen ~
I did notice your 'Heffernan' reference some months back, when you helped me out with my 'Nelson Brown', but I don't have any real information to pass on, except for the comment that there is no shortage of Heffernans in the country.    Most of them appear to be/have been in the southern half of the country.           I actually have a  a third or fourth cousin  married to a John Heffernan who, I think, is from Co. Kilkenny : however, I don't have an address for them at present...somewhere in Waterford.
Coincidentally, I also have an English cousin married to a 'Dyer', in Surrey.  Again, I have no current address. If/when I find anything re  these names, I know where to post it !
                          Regards.....Mike.

Hi Kathie

Did your Heffernan's come to Canada?  Do you know what part of Ireland they were from?

Karen
