Naturalisation certificate, Mendelsohn
« on: Monday 18 June 12 17:46 BST (UK) »
Have applied to National Archives for estimate of cost for copy of Naturalisation certificate for Bernard Mendelsohn.

Have just had estimate and needed a stiff drink, £51.75 for 115 pages.

Is there an alternative version - can I view personally for free?  Mind you as I live in Devon this is not likely so reckon I will just have to dream

Hi

Yes, if you went to the National Archives then you could view and photograph them with your own equipment for free.

I wonder as it's an estimate whether the 115 pages is a bundle of many people's certs and associated paperwork, and that the actual cost will be much less.  No way of knowing beforehand, I suppose.

If you're not in a rush I could add it to my list for my next visit...

Kind regards
Gaie

Gaie, thank you so much for your speedy reply and kind offer.

Issued for an estimate on HO 334/44/16837

Then found HO 144/853/151741

so not sure which is which,   however what I was looking for was the Naturalisation paper for Bernard Mendelsohn, naturalised 1907, living in Cardiff, watchmaker.

Am researching this for my foster daughter

Many thanks

I have just received a quote for £325.00. Their website gives just £25 for a naturalisation certificate, so I am puzzled by this estimated figure (also quoted 115 pages.  (1904 naturalisation)!  What did you decide to do? And advice/info appreciated!  Thanks

Hi Stellae

I too received a similar quote, I looks as if  unless you can pinpoint the exact page no you need to order the whole lot, unless Another Rootschatter can refine this?

Gaie very kindly offered to look this up for me for me on a visit to the National Archives.

Hi

HO 334/44/16837 is the certificate itself and consists of two pages.

HO 144/853/151741 consists of 17 pages and includes supporting letters, police reports on Mr Mendelsohn and his referees, a document listing his details, parents, wife and children, and his referee statements.

I've photographed them all and luckily they have all come out readable.  Yay  ;D

For other people's reference, series HO 334 are the certificates bound into books.  This particular book was numbered 44 and that is what you order HO 334/44).  You then look through the book for certificate 16837 (they are in numerical order).

Series HO 144 are the supporting files and you use the full reference to order.  You are then given the individual file.

PM me an e-mail address and I can send you the images.  Each image is about 2Mb so it will be a series of e-mails.  I can send 20Mb per e-mail, but you'd better check that you can receive that size of attachments.

Thinking about the quotes people have been given...

I looked up another set of naturalisation records for someone else.  The paperwork came to two pages of certificates and eleven pages in the file.

The quotes are probably based on the largest number of pages that could be in a file, and the final bill would be, in almost all circumstances, much lower.

Photocopying them must be a nightmare, some of the pages are very fragile and the tags are stiff with age.  It seems much easier to photograph them.

For each certificate there is an orange receipt for £5.  These were stuck on the certificates but the glue has dried out and they are falling off.  That is fortunate, because you're not supposed to crease any of the paper and if they were still fixed they would obscure part of the certificate!
