Prisoners 1851

Hi I just found one of my ancestors listed as being a prisoner in Wigtown ,in the 1851 census .I wondered if there is any way of finding out why he was there ?are there any records available ? his name is Nathorn Agnew aged 30 agricultural labourer
McCcoskry, Coskry,Copland, Rigg, McGinn,Agnew,Crone, Sw/Scotland
Kirkcudbrghtshire , Wigtownshire, Dumfrieshire
 
Jack,Connell

Many thanks for the info about the prison .I will try the avenues suggested and hopefully turn something up, but meantime thanks again for the help it was interesting reading about the prison itself
