Wonnangatta - Harry's Hut

I was looking for some facts about the murders at Wonnangatta back in 1918 and I came across this website.

I thought some of you might help the man who created this website with some of the facts about Harry Smith's family.

That is if you are up for a challenge.  I know I will be when I get the time.

Sounds like just what we need on a cold winters night.

George Hayes and Ellen O'Toole marry?
1856 George
1857 James who dies 1868
1859 Henry
1861 Mary

Ellen then leaves George and takes up with Oliver Smith, an American who has two sons already.

1864 Oliver Smith jnr
1865 William Hayes registered as father unknown
1867 Thomas Smith
1869 John Hayes father unknown

1872 twins Mary and Malinda, born and died soon after Ellens death on 5ht March about a week after giving birth.

What happened to all these children and can we find a death registration for James who died in Bairnsdale Hospital in 1868.
Apparently they were raised as Smiths, not Hayes.

All I can find so far is the birth for Thomas Smith 1867, father Oliver mother Ellen OTOOL eg 22084 at GRANT.

No luck on the death for James.

George Bernhard father George Rowless, mother Ellen JOEL 1856 at Blackwood.
James Bernard father George, mother Ellen TOO Mt Blackwood 1857.
Henry father Geo mother Ellen TOOLE Mt Blackwood 1859

Maybe Ellen's death is Ellen Hayes parents unknown, born Ireland age 36 reg 1365.
Mary's death father unknown, mother Ellen 12 days Wang 1366
Malinda 14 days reg 1367

I guess that the registrar knew the family and wouldn't register them as father Oliver Smith.

Ellen had 3 daughters. The twins who were her last and who died as infants shortly after their birth were called Mary and Malinda.

Her elder daughter, whos father was George Hayes was also called Mary. Did this mary die before the twins were born in 1872, or did she (as the website says) live with her father and therefore Ellen called one of her next daughters after her first?
