School Photo for dating please
« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 22:42 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone give me an idea when this photo was taken. I found it at my mum's house tonight and she thinks it must be of my grandmother, but no idea which child she is  :-\ :-\
The photo appears to be stuck onto the backing card.

I'm sure one of the experts will be able to date this from the clothing of the teachers. I've been told that children are difficult to date - especially, I suppose, due to the pinnifores and the fact that their fashions didn't change so often. I am 'guessing' early 1900's - pre ww1. But that is nothing more than a rough guess;) When was your grandmother born?
P Higgins the photographer - what is his address?

Children dressed like this over about a 30 year period, however the (what looks like) pupil teacher in the middle has an early 1900's style blouse.

Yes, concur with Jim. Also one of the older children seems to be wearing a late 1890s-early 1900s style blouse.

Early photos were printed on very thin paper that couldn't stand on its own, so were stuck to a thick cardboard backing. Don't try to peel it off because there will be nothing written on the back, and you'll ruin the photo. Tried it once :P :P :)

Cheers,

Thank you Ruskie & Jim for your help. My grandmother was born in 1899 so early 1900's could possibly fit if she is in the photo. Unfortunately the photographers address is no clearer on the original, but gran was born in Bristol was in Eastville workhouse and then fostered in the Almondsbury South Glos area. Have had no luck yet tracing the photographer in a census.

I have found a Peter Higgins photographer of 74 Friar Street Reading in the 1901 census and same man is described as "photographer late" in 1911 so assume he retired. Not sure if a photographer would travel from Reading to Bristol area in those days to work?
