Have you tried contacting Alan Stoner , he has I think the most info on Stoner's in the world . I think his website is www.stoner.org/uk  . On this website you will find most Stoner's bmd and census records and all searchable . You can also contact him if unsure .

Interested to read somebody mentioning the possibility of a "broomstick wedding" in this case - I've just read "Marriage Law for Genealogists" by Professor Rebecca Probert, who's the world's leading authority on the history of marriage laws and practices, which explains in detail that the idea of broomstick weddings (and in fact handfasting and all other kinds of 'informal' marriage practices) are complete myths - that's not to say that the grandmother hadn't heard of them, but that they were the inventions of Victorian folklorists and never in fact happened. I'd highly recommend her book if you want to get a much better idea of the different legal and social choices facing these people you're tracing.

hope it's of use - Professor Probert is at Warwick University, and encourages genealogists to get in touch with their stories of interesting marriages they've found - she's easy enough to find on google

Another Gargrave puzzle - can anyone help resolve this - any help will be much appreciated.
The following iis from transcripts of the Gargrave Parish Registers

Marriage: 22 Dec 1849
James  BRADLEY  bachr  full age  sawyer  Broughton  Edward  sawyer
Elizabeth  STONER  wid  full age  seamstress  Gargrave  John  Lund  shoemaker
Edw Thorpe, Charlotte Auston  (B)

Baptism: 9 Jun 1822 (date corresponds near enough to age on 1851/61/71 census married to BRADLEY)
Elizabeth LUND of John and Mary, Gargrave, Shoemaker

The question is - who was her first husband?
Gargrave PR has a possibility
William Stoner (bap. 21.7.1822 Gargrave - bur. 26.9.1847 Gargrave), son of Tempest Stoner & Mary he is the same age as Elizabeth and dies before her second marriage - but I cant find a corresponding BMD:MC
or for that matter any MC for STONER:LUND - so maybe she married again inbetween so that BRADLEY is her 3rd marriage and STONER a2nd marriage - so the name she married STONER with is not LUND -

But I arent getting anywhere with that either - I'm stuck ???
There are BMD:MCs for Elizabeth LUND Skipton Mar 1838 and Jun 1837 and Elizabeth LAND Skipton Jun 1844

There was a George Stoner who married Sarah Cunningham , they had a son George Stoner who married Elizabeth Metcalf , he died in 1849 . Could this Elizabeth Stoner (Metcalf ) be the one you are looking for .

Don't think so.

Original maiden name is Elizabeth LUND as evidenced by
22 Dec 1849, Gargrave Marriage
James  BRADLEY  bachr  full age  sawyer  Broughton  Edward  sawyer
Elizabeth  STONER  wid  full age  seamstress  Gargrave  John  Lund  shoemaker

Elizabeth LUND bapt 9 Jun 1822 Gargrave, so a first marriage must be after start of Marriage records.
I didn't find your George STONER, Elizabeth METCALF marriage on BMD between 1837 and 1848 - maybe I missed it - does that marriage indicate if she was a 'spinster' - if so def not her

All the clues I have are in this thread
