Marshall Family
« on: Thursday 21 June 12 18:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for a burial record for my 2x gt grandfather David Marshall, born 1837 in Skirlaugh, East Yorkshire.  I think he died sometime in the 1860s.  His wife was Ann, and he had sons David and Frederic and a daughter, Maria.  After his death his family ended up in Bradford, West Yorks.  His parents were Thomas and Jane Marshall.

Maria can be found in the 1881 census in Bradford, but I have not been able to identify her in any censuses after this.  If anyone has this lady in their family tree and knows what might have happened to her I would be most grateful!

Chris

FreeBMD has the death of a David Marshall in the December Qtr of 1860 at Hull Reg. District (vol. 9b page 158).

Some possibilities?

There is also the death of a Maria Marshall aged 46 in the Sept Qtr of 1882 in the Bradford Reg. District (vol. 9b page 10). However that would make her birth year 1836 so not her?

There is also the death of a Maria Marshall aged 36 in the March Qtr of 1885 in the Bradford Reg. District (vol. 9b page 173). However that would make her birth year 1849 so also not her?

Is his David's birth year correct at 1837? making him 23 at death?

Hi there

I have seen Frederic Marshall born about 1864 so one would
presume David didnt die until just after?
Also you say you can see Maria on the 1881 census ?
Is she Maria Jane born 1859? If not which one is she
as there a few to chose from. Who is she living with?
If you cannot find her could it be that she married not
died?

A few queries I know but it may help someone to find her
and David

Hi Sandymc,

I was looking at this post yesterday and didn't get too far other than I think that Maria on the 1881 census is as follows -

Annie Marshall head wid 41
Maria Renton dau 21 b. Wansford, Yorkshire
David Marshall 17 b. Besford,  ??? Yorkshire
Frederic Marshall 17 b. Besford, Yorkshire
Edward Manion 20

RG11/4445/69/21

Marriage of Maria -
q3 1877, Skipton Vol 9a Page 82
Maria Marshall and Thomas Renton are on the same page.

There is a Baptism of a Harriet b. 4 Aug 1878, bapt. 23Aug 1878, St Chrysostom, Bradford.
Father - Thomas Renton Occ Painter
Mother - Maria Jane formally Marshall
Abode - 287(9) Bolton Road, Bradford.

Harriet may have died in infancy - Sep 1878, Bradford.

That's all I've found at the moment, hopefully it's the correct Maria  :)

HO107/1225; Book: 19;  Folio: 4; Page: 5

HO107/2365; Folio: 97; Page: 35

Can't see him after that.

The 1860 Hull death is for a little'un. (aged 1 year) see yorksbmd.

& I'm wondering if "Besford" is "Beeford"

David Marshall wed ann Wood there 1858.

Hi

I have seen someones tree and it does state that a Thomas Renton
married a Maria Marshall in Bradford but I cant seem to find the
marriage on any of my sites unless it is spelt differently.
I think that is the Maria then but if the poster doesnt come
on to confirm any of this we are working in the dark laugh. :)
I also saw David b 1837 at Skirlaugh so I think that is correct.
Pauline I think you are right about Besford in fact is Beeford.
It is 8 miles from Driffield and I cannot find a Besford in Yorkshire.

Just checked and could see Maria's marriage is on FreeBMD

Vol 9a Page 82, Skipton, Sep 1877

Hopefully Chris will clarify some details to enable us to continue the search  :)

Hi, and thank you all so much for your replies.

I did forget to say that Maria married a Thomas Renton (reg Skipton). She was indeed born in Wansford, about 1859.  They did have a baby called Harriet whop died in infancy,  After this baptism I can find no further mention of Maria in any record.  I have searched immigration recs on Ancestry in case she left the country, but without success.  There is a story that someone in that family emigrated to America but I do not know who this was.

Pauline, the 'Besford' in the 1881 census record for Maria's brother David should indeed read Beeford.
In other censuses he gave his place of birth as Bradford but this is not correct.

I suspect that David Sr died not long after the death of Frederick.  I had seen the death index entries for him but was not sure of any of them.  I'm hoping a burial will turn up sometime.  He did marry Anne E Wood (reg Driffield).

For the record, David Marshall Jr died in Bradford in 1904, having fallen down the stairs at his home while drunk!

Thank you to everyone who replied to my query.  I'm going to keep looking!  I am sure that David (b 1837) died in East Yorks,

Chris
