Wallis SHORT
« on: Saturday 23 June 12 15:06 BST (UK) »
Wallis SHORT was born Qtr 1, 1857 in St Martins, Cornwall, England and emigrated to SA sometime after 1871, possibly to Natal.

I am interested to know where he settled, did he marry, and when (and where) he died?

Any help appreciated!

Hi Allam

A quick search of our archives turned up the following.

http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300ds?20120625102007587C6206&RH=00000002

just click on each line and it will take you to a description of the document.

If it is your Wallis Short then he appears to have married twice, first to a Hester Porter who died inn 1899 and then to a Jeannie Molison who died in 1941 with Wallis following in 1942.  The documents are in the archives in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, so he would have lived in Natal.

If it is the right Wallis Short, the relevant documents can be ordered through www.eggsa.org, their prices are very reasonable.  Just follow the instructions.  The estate documents could give you quite a bit of information, residence, children etc.

Good luck.

Hi,

It took some time to find this site again, but it is full of info on early Natal, has shipping lists etc.  You may find something.

Hi 3sillydogs,

Many thanks for the trouble you have taken.  Are there any obituary notices that can be searched to aid me to see if this is the right Wallis Short?

Jeannie Molison was my great grand aunt. What would you like to know?  I have a fair bit of info.

Hi Joffy,

Thanks for posting - I still do not know if my Wallis SHORT is the one who married Jeannie MOLISON.  If so, do you have a copy of the death notice for either Wallis or Jeannie?  This might shed some light on their lives.

Where and when were Wallis & Jeannie married?  Were there any children? if so when and where were they born etc.

Jeannie has an entry in the 1935 edition of Women of South Africa - what deed(s) made her so worthy?

Apologies for so many questions, but know almost nothing about Wallis' adult life.

Best regards,
