I have been given a pc from a friend we already have four laptops connected to internet wirelessly via router and external modem how do I get the pc connected?

If the PC  doesn't have a wifi card installed then connect the pc with a lan cable to the router.  You can buy lan cables of varying lengths.

Alternatively you can buy a USB wifi link for the PC or install a wifi card.
Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

I have cable connected from router to pc but still no connection I must be doing something wrong

Just for troubleshooting purposes, try connecting the pc to the modem directly with the lan cable to see if it works.  If that doesn't work, try another lan cable.

Take a look at the device manager and see if anything is listed under network adapters, it may be a driver issue...
control panel> system>device manager

Ask your friend if the pc was in full working order before going out and buying any new components!

Did your router come with a CD. If it did you possibly need to install the software on the PC.

Is your connection to internet via a BT phone line or Virgin cable?
If Virgin, no CD required just plug into your router then off you go!

Thanks all its virgin try it again soon there is only one place at the back of pc to plug cable in so I can't see what I'm doing wrong

In the TCP/IPset up ensure that DHCP is selected

Ah, no computer connected via cable as yet.
You need to access the settings in the router to allow desktop to connect.
What make/model of router have you?
