Priestley family tree
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 05:57 BST (UK) »
I am new to this, only joined yesterday, so not sure how to use this site.  I am researching my gt gt gt grandparents, Sarah and James Priestley of Newington Surrey, have just got their mge cert in 1811 in St Marys Newington, Sarah was a Priestley before she married James Priestley, possibly born in Yorkshire.  So I am at a stumbling block, how do I go back to find both the parents of this couple.  Their details were not on the mge cert.  There are many people with these names.  James was born around 1791 and Sarah was born around 1788.  I am descended from their daughter Maria Louisa b 1814 but would love to hear from descendants of their other 7-8 children.  I am in Wellington, New Zealand and have most of the family tree done from their mge onwards.

On the 1841 census HO107 piece 1064 book 3 folio 20 page 32
St Mary Newington Lambeth
James 50, tailor
 Sarah 53 a monthly nurse.
Born in County?  - NO for both of them. So neither born in Surrey

registration of birth, marriages and deaths didn't come in to effect until 1837 in UK so is it a parish record you have?

thanks for this, but I knew that, found it yesterday in our local library.  But dont know how to go backwards.  I have their mge cert in 1811, but both had the name of Priestley.  That was the bride's maiden name as well as her married name, Sarah was born around 1788 possibly in york, and james was born in 1791,  when they say James, not born here, does that mean in that parish, or in the whole area of surrey?  Thanks for your quick reply though.  Is this a one-to-one thing or do my questions appear on a rootsweb chatroom.  If its part of a chat room, how do I go and see if anyone else is researching this family?  I just got the email from you in my email box and went reply.  Thanks, Valerie in NZ

Hi Valerie

Any member of RootsChat can read your posts.

When it says not born in county it means the whole of the county. So both James and Sarah were born in another county.
Do you have them on the 1851 census because from 1851 onwards the place of birth was entered on the census. Were they still alive in 1851?

thanks for that crisane, james died in 1849, sarah died in 1854, I did see her census in 1851 several years ago and she was a monthly nurse (a plunket nurse as we call it here).  But I have lost it over the years.  It did say the place which I think was in yorkshire.  She was born in or around 1788 parents unknown.  Do you do lookups for people.  She lived in newington, lambeth, st peters area.  Thanks if you can help me.

There are many knowledgeable people on RootsChat who will do lookups for others just as we have on this post of yours.
Different people have access to different records.

thanks for finding out that, how did you find it so quick, do you have your own set of census records.  Was there other people at that address on census, e.g. children etc.  Also when you send me a reply I get it addressed to my email add which is fine, but how do I find the main page where everyones messages are on it for the priestley family?  I didnt bookmark the site.
