schools in Shoreditch
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 19:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, My father was born and brought up in Orsmby Street Shoreditch. I,m trying to find out the school he would have attended. He was born in 1909 so would have been at school between 1914 and 1923. If anyone could tell me the most likely school he would have gone to this would help.
Thanks Dave

Want to try giving a name, see if anybody can pick him up. There are school records online now?

Hi

It looks like you're spoilt for choice  ;D

Have a look at the Atlas Map of London 1908:

http://mapco.net/bart1908/bart1908.htm

You want two sections, Islington and Bethnal Green; hovering your mouse over the map will tell you what each section is called.

Islington
http://mapco.net/bart1908/bart24.htm

Bethnal Green
http://mapco.net/bart1908/bart25.htm

Ormsby Street is on the Islington map running north-south.  It's on the far right side of the map lying parallel with the railway line running between Haggerston and Shoreditch Stations.

If you line up the Bethnal Green map (look for the gasworks on the left hand side) it appears that there was a small school in between Ormsby and Shap Streets; one on the corner of Hows Street and Weymouth Terrace; one on Brunswick Street and one on Dunloe Street.

Hi Drabbie

Saw the name Harry Brown - so just had to say Hello.   My grandfather AND great-grandfather were both also Harry Brown.  Harry Brown the younger was  brought up in Bethnal Green    ;)

Looking around, I can only see school records in London for 1840-1911 so too early for Harry unless anyone knows otherwise; did he have older siblings?

Shap Street school admissions & discharges are available to search (Hackney borough), so sibling names might help...
