Bullin, chidren freeze to death 1854
« on: Monday 25 June 12 10:10 BST (UK) »
Posting this just in case there are people researching the above surname.

I recieved information regarding a James Pickford, in this report from the Westmoreland Gazette Jan.14 1854, it reports how James rescued a William Bullin, a "Tumbler" who with his two sons, Robert,6, and William, 8, were stranded on the Snake pass in a snow storm, James could only rescue the father, and the two sons perished at the roadside.

I recieved it as a pdf file and couldnt fathom how to transfer same to here hence the above synopsis
Attenborough, Bacon,Melbourne, Thorpe, Ride,Simpson/ Derbyshire, Judson,Bacon,/Keighley,
Lockett/ Manchester, Harling/ Lancaster & Manchester

Oh what a sad story.  I think it would have been easier to
carry the kids than the man?
Snake pass still gets blocked even this Winter with heavy snow
and we have warm clothes and snow ploughs so pity the
poor souls in those days.

What struck me was the repeated attempts to treat them using alcohol, especially the spirits.  That's the worst thing you can do - a flask of warm tea would have been better!
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

People still make the same mistake today.

Tragic story  :(

I'm confused about the date though  ???  The article was written on Saturday 14th January 1854 (I think I'm reading this right and have checked the 14th was a Saturday), about events that happened 'Thursday evening last' which would have been Thursday 12th January 1854 wouldn't it?

I don't understand where 1821 in your subject comes from  ???

Oh I see!   ;D Apologies, I found it difficult to read too - hence checking whether January 14th 1854 was a Saturday, I originally thought it said 1824.  I hope I didn't offend you, that certainly wasn't my intention  :-[
