Reverend John Saunders 1708?- 1777
« on: Monday 25 June 12 18:03 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to track down John Saunders, brother of Joan Jeffery, wife of Robert Jeffery of Huntspill, Gent.

In Robert's will he mentions his great expectations of John Saunders estate, Robert's will is dated 1779, so probate was maybe taking some time

Best regards

Simon

Dear Simon
The church of England Database has a John Saunders which may be your man.
He's the Rector of Winterborne,Gloucestershire frm April 1759 to his death 16/4/1777.He supposedly had the highest theological degree from either Oxford or Cambridge but can't find him on their list of alumni.

Hello there

Thanks for this I did wonder if this might be him. Strange he is not on the alumni. I wonder where I might find his will or better still an obituary. this would then clarify if he is the right one.

best and thanks

Dear simon
His will is at the National archives under their documents on line service.Probate Probate 11/4/1778 PROB11/1041 John saunders Doctor in Divinty Rector of Winterbourne.
Had another look at the Alumni of Oxford, this time in the archive.org website rather than ancestry.
He is the son of John Saunders gent of London .Went to St John's college and matric 1.7.1735 age 16 BA 1739 and MA 1742-3 DD 1752.So probably not your man.
However above that is a John  Saunders s of George of Hunstpill somerset.Hart Hall matric 30.3.1726 age 18 BA 1729 and MA 1732.
Could he be yours?

The latter John sounds more likely, the right age, I will see if I can find out more. On the other hand the Saunders/jeffery family had London connections too. We will see many thanks. I am awaiting a call from somerset archives re a Saunders Pedigree they have

Thanks for your help much appreciated

I will see the Huntspill registers online and keep you posted
