Agree Kennett - 'from Sydney' without an address is very odd!

Hi there,

I looked through St John’s Rd (see 1895 listing below) and could not find Mr Vosper.  There was one listing for a photographer on St John’s Rd :  at 53 St John’s Road, John C WIEPEL, photographer.

1895 Sands Alpha Directory

I cannot find Mr Vosper in any directories earlier than 1885, sorry, but he was definitely in Sydney by 1878

NSW ER 1878 WEST SYDNEY

Cheers, JM

William Henry VOSPER, his wife Hannah VIVIAN and dau Florence arrived in South Australia on 28 Jun 1859.  His occupation was noted as miner from Liskeard, Cornwall. Four children were born at Kooringa, Wallaroo Mines and Talisker between 1860 and 1870.   These are all mining areas.  Just a bit of trivia. The Talisker Silver Mine was adjacent to a grazing property I owned until 2004. Lovely spot on the South Coast of SA overlooking Kangaroo Island.

In 1872 he and his family departed Adelaide for London and in 1876 he advertised his business at Grafton NSW stating he had just completed a four year overseas tour.  By 1880 he was living in Sydney.   Hannah died in 1904 and William in 1918.

JM has kindly listed the Sands entries. A couple more entries. In 1883 he was listed as photographer 694 George Street, Sydney. In 1893 he was living at 43 St John's Road, Forest Lodge.

Cheers
Cando

So if he didn't go to Sydney until 1880 - how does that tie in with Jim's dating of 1860-70s.

He was wearing old clothes 'cos he couldn't afford others  - or Australia was behind in men's fashions stakes or??

Or what?

Good-looking gent anyhow!!    ;)

Thank you JM
It was very nice of you to go to the trouble to find so much information about W H Vosper and I appreciate it. I can add it to the information I am collecting on the photographers of old photos I have.
You also found information on J C Wiepel. I have 2 photos by him taken in Narrabri NSW in the 1860s and 12 taken by him at West Maitland NSW in the 1870s

Thank you Cando
Thank you also for taking the time to find information about the life of William Henry Vosper. I will also add this to the information on the photographer. He has gone from a name to a man with a family and history. How amazing you had such a close connection to the Talisker Silver Mine area. (I will have to goole the area and have a look)

Wiggy has that “In the 1870s W.H Vosper was in association with W H Schroeder in Sydney, and between 1890 and 97 he was working at 694 Collins street Sydney -
Schroeder was active between 1863 and 1891.”

It is quite possible for the clothes to be old fashioned and a hand me down. My ancestors in country NSW had large families and had farms, hotels and butcher shops so nothing fancy.

Thank you all

Regards

Terri

The clothes may or may not have been hand-me-downs but that doesn't get away from the fact that this is 1860's-early70's cardstock.

Thank you Jim

I am happy with that. It also works in with a lot of the other photos in the album.
Of the photos investigated so far of the 100 in the album it has been 1860s and 70s.
The owner of the album died in 1888.

Regards

Terri
