'Ginger' George
« on: Saturday 30 June 12 23:35 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am wondering if anyone can offer me any more information about a Durham amateur footballer and Spanish Civil War volunteer, 'Ginger' George?

I have minimal info at this stage but assume that George was playing in the north east during the early/mid 1930s. I know that he lived for a period in Fourth Street, Stanley.

Any help at all with this would very much appreciated.

Thanks
Steve Ringwood
East Sussex.

Hi Carole

As far as I know his surname is George and his nickname was 'Ginger'. The only record I have of him is a poster (reproduced in a book) advertising a 'welcome home' celebration (following his participation as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War) at West Stanley Co-op Hall for 'amateur footballer 'Ginger' George'.

I have made a request to the Durham Amateur Football Trust but was wondering whether the name was a familiar one to football/history enthusiasts in the north east?

Thanks
Steve

Suggest you take a look at the 1911 census which has one George family living in Stanley. Your Ginger may well be a younger son or the child of one of the older boys.
