1891 census, North Uist
« on: Monday 02 July 12 05:54 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters,

I'm looking for 3 people on the 1891 census on North Uist. I'm reasonably sure they were in Grimsay but I can't find them on *A* and don't know how to do a reverse search by location or by occupation.  ???

The first is:

Archibald "Archy" MacDiarmid
Birth 14 Feb 1863 in Flodda, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Death 26 Aug 1895 in Grimsay, North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland

Archy was a freight forwarder in Grimsay according to his DC.

Brother-in-law was informant at his death & I have reason to believe they were living in the same community at the time, but I can't find them either.

Alexander Nicolson
Birth abt 1855 in North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Death in Lochmaddy, North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland

m

Ann MacDiarmid
Birth 1855 in Flodda, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Death 23 Feb 1938 in Lochmaddy, North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland

Can you please put me on the right path to the 1891 census.  :)

Many thanks.

Hi RM

This is the only entry I can see for sister Ann and husband Alexander Nicholson in 1891 (sure you have likely also come across it):

Alexande Nicholson 30, crofter b. North Uist
Ann Nicholson 30 b. South Uist
Mary Nicholson 2
John Archibald Nicholson 7 Months

Address: North Uist

For 1901:

Alexander Nicholson 41 crofter b. Grimsay, Invernesshire
Ann Nicholson 42 b. Beubealer, Invernesshire (?spl, Benbecula as per 1861 for your Ann?)
Mary Nicholson 12
John Archie Nicholson 10
Ewen Nicholson 8
Alexander Nicholson 5
Andrew John MacAlpine Nicholson 1 Month

Address: Ardnastruban, North Uist

Birth years for Alexander and wife Ann a couple of years out from what you have... :-\

However, the only marriage I can see for a couple with these names would fit with the birth years of children from 1891. Possible marriage in 1886 in North Uist for parents?

Hi Monica. Thank you for weighing in here. :)

Are there incoming passenger records for Port of Glasgow in the 1880s? I'm using *A* and don't seem to be coming across any.

I know that Ann & Alexander Nicolson married Grimsay, NUist on 15 Jun 1886 so no worries with searching that out. Thanks for looking though.

I don't have any children listed for Ann & Alexander ... as yet.  ::) ;D Ann was born on Flodda which is regularly recorded as SUist so I'm thinking the 1891 census you've found may be them. :)

Birth years & Hebridean census records ... all I can do is sigh.  :P ::) ;D

No sign of my Archibald though for 1891? He'd been away & was hoping to pin down his year of return. If you can't find it though, then he must have returned after the 1891 census.

Many thanks.
