Hi ladykincavel

Just because you know the correct spelling doesn't mean that the enumerator and/or the transcriber got it right   :o ::)

Be prepared for a lot of lateral thinking when searching records  :)

1881 also gives them all b Sunderland

It is "Alday" on image so is not a mistranscription

Most searches won't allow you to use a wildcard for the first letter, which is where the problem seems to be.  Even leaving exact spelling off won't necessarily find Alday if you are searching for Olday.  A lot depends on which site you're searching  ::)

Try searching on given names, dob, pob, parents and/or spouse in any combination, without a surname.

You may have to do a bit of trawling, but it often gives results

Thank you-Charles was born in 1841-in Mecklenberg-Rostock(transcribed from family bible) His father is Frederick Olday( from his marriage certificate) but I don't know where to go from here now, as I am hitting a wall after searching all the free census sites. Can anyone come up trumps for me on this one? Thank you
