Frances

Thank you, I am most grateful for your information.   Your posting has given me whole new avenues to pursue.

I came  late to family history, and my generation are now the elders in the family.Unfortunately we have very little to go on except the odd memory of a conversation overheard - such as William not marrying, or a few carefully preserved newspaper cuttings.

Are some of the newspapers you mentioned available on-line?

Nanatrish.
 :)

The IoM times was digitised as part of an earlier British Library scheme and may be available via larger libraries - the other Manx newspapers have been digitised, free at iMuseum in Douglas, planned to go on line later this year but under some, as yet undecided, subscription scheme.
You can get more details via http://www.manxnationalheritage.im - library@mnh.gov.im might be helpful as well
The census via ancestry.com or similar tho ancestry is known for generally poor indices (at least for Manx names) - I would try to find the marriage of Richd + Phoebe - must be a fairly unusual combination! + probably in Liverpool - I would also use the 1911 census to try to find Wm Baxter in London - probate was granted 30 Aug 1911 so good chance he was in Brixton at census time - his age + birth place will then help find him
My own website www.manxnotebook.com might help a lttle with places etc
any thing with a Manx Connection

Richard Baxter married Phoebe Shergold in Liverpool in 1900. It was either a registry office marriage or non-conformist marriage. It was not Church of England or Roman Catholic.

Thank you again Blue.

Just used up my last credits on FindMyAncestor with mixed results so the information from you was most helpful.

Many thanks
