William Ellison - Newcastle Upon Tyne

Hi,

I'm trying to find out more about the above.  We know he was married in Newcastle in 1838 to Elizabeth Best and on the 1851 &1861 census she is in Stepney in London, but no mention of him (assuming he was at sea?), any more information on him would be great!  He was a Master Mariner, so any help with finding out about his sailing career would be brilliant!

Have you found him on the 1841 census, if so do you have a rough date of birth for him?

We think he was born in 1813 in North Shields.  We couldn't find him on 1841 census, but can find his wife, Elizabeth (b. 1814).  He reappears in 1881 as a retired Master Mariner.

There are records for William Ellison born North Shields about that time on the merchant navy records

Marriage shows his Father was William on Familysearch.
Do you actually have the Cert?
If so what is his Fathers Occp?

No, i'm affraid we don't have the marriage cert.  Does anyone have any advice on how I find out about his career as a merchant seaman, please?  Did they take census records on ships (i'm assuming that's why he is missing)?
