Which house number?

Hi all,dont know if this is a silly question,how do you know which house/property your ancestors lived in when the census doesnt include a house number?Im going searching soon.Thats also assuming the property is still there. Thanks.

All you can do is try and work it out from census routes and landmarks. With certificate you're a bit stuck for clues. Pauline

 PaulineJ,thanks for your swift reply.A certain free site shows the next household ,itake meaning neighbours,so i take it if you count the properties ,which may include business properties,  that will give you the correct house?

It's worth looking at the street on Google streetview before you go - just in case there's no trace of any buildings old enough to be relevant.  Also helps you get your bearings before you go I find

The census probably didn't include the house number, because it didn't have one!  As far as I know, numbering houses only became an issue when the postal service was introduced.

If you would like to give us the details, and the census reference if you have it, we'll see what we can find that might help

Ive got 3 addresses.1871,for the Isles of Scilly,folio 14,page 19 .119, PARADE 1.Next one is for 1851,folio 534 page 12,H0107/1917 Part 8 St.Ives.4 Tregenna Hill.Would 4 be the house number?And the last one is,1841,Kenwyn Truro, folio 51, page 29 for Carclew Terrace.All regarding the Sampson family.Is that info ok?Sorry cant paragraph properly, still learning!!Thanks.

Although this gives all the information, there is a 'standard' way of showing it  year-code/piece/folio/page + name. 

So in this case

H0107/1917/534/12   Sampson

Don't worry, you'll soon learn   

4 is the schedule number - the number on the form the occupants were asked to fill in.  So in this case, there are no house numbers. 

If you are able to see all the images, the enumerator started in

Fore Street
Tregenna Place
Tregenna Hill  19 properties
Gabriel Street
Dove Street

Looking at these on a modern map (and assuming the street names haven't changed!) it looks as though he probably went along one side of Tregenna Hill and then back along the other side.  Unfortunately, without a pub or a church or some other landmark building that still exists, it's almost impossible to say exactly where the Sampsons lived.

1841,Kenwyn Truro, folio 51, page 29 for Carclew Terrace

The District Description for this says

All that part of the Township of Truro which lies to the south east of the Turnpike road leading from Truro to Calenick comprising Fairmantle Street, Carclew Street and Carclew Terrace

Fairmantle Street & Carclew Street still exist, but I can't see Carclew Terrace.

Again no house numbers.  The 1 at the end of the information you have given just shows that the house is occupied.
