parish church Garw Valley
« on: Monday 09 July 12 22:36 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I have the marriage certificate of my Grandparents April 22nd 1901.  It took place in the Parish Church in the Parish of Garw Valley, Glamorgan.

Can anyone give me the name of this Church?

Banns were read for this marriage, would they give me more information than shown on the marriage certificate?

If either of the Father's were deceased, would this be imperatively shown on the certificate?

Many thanks for any help - Gwen

the banns would show less, not more, details. Just because a father isn't shown as deceased on a marriage cert, doesn'nt mean that he was alive at the time.

Genuki is a good source for parish churches. If I'm reading the link correctly, it would be St David's in Pontycymmer

Thank-you  Osprey

On the marriage cert, their place of residence is Pontycymer but on the 1901 census which was taken just a couple of weeks before the marriage, they were living in Pant Street, Llangeinor - I see from your link that there are/were two Churches, St. David's in Pontycymer and St. Cein in Llangeinor.  The vicar was Thomas Tissington, so maybe that will enable me to  confirm which Church?

Thanks again - Gwen

If you look up Mr Tissington on the census, it may help.

Excellent advice Osprey - thank you!!

Thomas Tissington lived in Llangeinor, so I think I can presume that he was vicar at St.Cein in Llangeinor, unless he officiated at both?

he may have done. Sometimes in the occupation field, it says where someone is vicar of, but not in this case it would seem. You could try historical directories or there are people on the boards who have access to lists of clergymen.
