Absolutely brilliant crisane thank you so much!  Looks like one of the hidden ones is finally coming home.

How do I find out when/how they emigrated?

Thanks again.   ;D

Walter on the 1901 census which has also been linked to his entry on the 1911 census.  Click on split image to see the original.
Immigration year for 1901 was 1857 and 1911 states 1851.

The 1861 census was taken January 13 and the age given was the age at your next birthday.  You can use the ages on the 1861 census and place of birth to also narrow down when they emigrated.  Unfortunately passenger lists from that period of time are sparse.

That is brilliant, I think the 1851 date will be the right one, but unfortunately there's no trace of how they got there.  I'd been hoping for a family connection possibly to the Stewarts.   :-\  Margaret's parents and their eldest son ended up in NZ.

I'm fairly certain this Walter and Agnes were named for James' father Walter and mother Agnes, I'm interested because Walter and Agnes in Perthshire were my ancestors too and yes there was a youngest son James who had vanished.

I'm just a bit surprised that James became a farmer as he was a time served mason here in Scotland on the 1851 census Sunday 30th March 1851 (Henry was just 1 month old).

Agnes dau of James and Mgt married 1885 Rev Peter Strang (bn Ontario 1856) and after marriage lived in Argyle Manitoba.  I know Peter moved to Regina in 1894 but I'm not sure about Agnes I just can't find out when/where she died.

However I'm sure some more internet searching will eventually turn up something!   :)

Many thanks again Debbie, that has filled in a huge gap, I am very grateful.   ;D

Found their deaths in Regina, they both outlived their son John who died in 1920.  Agnes lived till 1948 and Rev Peter died in July 1934.   ;)
