I have a relative that only appeared on one census as a coachman all the others he was some form of ag lab,
George may have been a coachman at the time of his son's marriage but it may have been just for a few years between censuses.
Also if father was in service the family may have only been in Bowden for a short period of time during which William was born.

Well the ideas on here have given the spur for a fresh try - and successful!

RG9/3034 In 1861 George is a coachman at Harefield Lodge (working at the Hall, presumably) in Rochdale, now Heywood. His wife is Phillis and his son William is a groom, so he's in the right trade, even if it says he was born in Broughton Lancs not Bowdon Cheshire!

Thanks for the inspiration

Ah that does look interesting.

Encouragingly, in 1841 (when they are in Broughton) William is aged 10 months, which is consistent with a 1 August 1840 birth given that the 1841 census date was 6 June.

George disappears between 1871 and 1881 census so had a look for his death. Looks as if it is A-J 1876 aged 58 8E 12 at Rochdale, Lancs

... and suddenly it gets easier ... Lancashire Parish Clerks online (an excellent site) takes the ancestry of George's wife Phillis back to Colne Lancs in early 18th century - a whole lot of inbred surnames Riley, Pilling and Binns amongst them
