Thanks Janette so the Mary Ann is a possible. On William's marriage certificate it says his mother's name is Mary Elizabeth Coin but this could be wrong.

I think Francis Goodwin died in 1902.

I have just found a marriage in 1907 in Bolton, Lancashire for a Mary Elizabeth Goodwin to John Jennings and on the 1911 census Mary Elizabeth Jennings a widow and son Francis Goodwin Jennings aged 20 and I am now totally confused. Did Mary and Francis come to NZ and drop the name Jennings.

Any idea's?

Pauline

Hi Anthea and Janette,

William Goodwin was born in 1882 in Oldham, Lancashire and came to NZ in 1904(information from death cert) His parents were Francis Goodwin and Mary Elizabeth Cohen (from marriage certificate).

William served in the imperial forces in WW1 and was buried in the RSA section in the Timaru cemetry on the 6 July 1967. William is recorded on the WW1 nominal roll No30786 (30787 on his memorial stone) His brother Ernest Henry was No30785. Their NOK is Mrs M Goodwin (mother) 42 Pollen St, Grey Lynn, Auckland. Ernest Henry died in 1917. The occupation of William and Ernest on the roll is Butcher.

If this is Williams mother when did she arrive in NZ? and what happened to her afterwards?

Also is there any way of finding more information on Ernest Henry Goodwin so that I can be sure I have the correct family. Something just does not seem right.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Pauline

Here is the Auckland Museum's Cenotaph entry for William

http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/Cenotaph/81552.detail?Ordinal=65&c_surname_search=goodwin

There is also a WW1 file at Wellington Archives

http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=16787244

You could start a new thread requesting a  Wellington Archives WW1 file be digitised
hopefully there may be more info on how long his mother had been in NZ

Cheers Janette

Hello...

CWGC says...

GOODWIN, ERNEST HENRY
Service No: 30785
Date of Death: 04 Oct 1917
Age: 23

"Son of George and Mary Goodwin, of 1(?) Howe St, Newton, Auckland, New Zealand"

Howe Street is right next door to Pollen Street so the different address may not be an issue.

-----

1917 (year of death) minus 23 (age at death) equals 1894 so this is possibly the corresponding BDM NZ Births listing

1894/7951 - GOODWIN, Ernest - mother: Mary   father: George

The RSA plaque for the William GOODWIN buried in Timaru can be viewed on the Timaru Council cemetery website. The plaque gives his Imperial Forces service number as 430787

The UK National Archives has the medal card for William GOODWIN with Service No.430787, which you can view for a fee. Search using the service number.

I think the NZ service record for William GOODWIN with Service No.30786 is for a different person (possibly BDM NZ Births 1892/11988) but would second Janette's suggestion for a look-up of the WW1 file to sort that out.
