John MacLeod born Island of Raasay, 1790-1800
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 03:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for John MacLeod born, Island of Raasay probably 1790-1800.  He was married there, to a woman whose name is unknown. and they had five - six children before emigrating to Prince Edward Island, Canada between 1835 & 1839.

Their children were

Mary MacLeod, said to be the oldest girl, born perhaps abt 1819
Christina MacLeod
Catherine MacLeod, born abt 1821 (by age at death)
Roderick MacLeod, born 8 Mar 1825
Donald MacLeod
Murdoch MacLeod

When family emigrate, it is said that Murdoch was left with his cousin, John MacKenzie, a tailor, from whom he learned the tailoring trade.  Maybe he is on 1841 census in Scotland.

Is there any information to be found on this family?

Probably your best bet is to contact Norma Macleod who operates <a href="http://www.skye-roots.co.uk/">Skye Roots</a>, which includes the Isle of Raasay in its coverage.

Hello:

You might want to research this website it has a wealth of information about MacLeod's in PEI and it's the main ancestry site for PEI.
http://www.islandregister.com/mcleod.html

There's also a wealth of information on this site regarding MacLeod's on PEI on this site.

http://www.linneberg.com/skye/leodpei.html

My MacLeod Raasay connection is a Margaret MacLeod born Raasay 1795 and she married a Murdoch MacLean and died in Lewes, PEI in 1888.
Unlike the elusive McDonald's that I have been trying to research the MacLeod's of PEI are well documented because of people like Harold MacLeod who wrote a book on the PEI clan and their origins.
Good luck with your search, Jane

eilthireach & Jehane,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.

I have read Harold MacLeod's book, "The MacLeods of Prince Edward Island"  My great great grandfather John MacLeod is in the book under The Family of John MacLeod and 1st Scottish Wife, 2nd Margaret MacPherson of East Line Road, pg 140.  There is even an extract from the Autobiography and Journal of Rev. Donald MacLeod, who is my great grandfather.  I have also been in contact with George F. Sanborn Jr. who has provided me with info.

It is John's life in Scotland & his first wife's info that I don't have.  It may not be possible since his name is John MacLeod and a lot of MacLeods on Raasay seemed to have named their sons John.  It is true in my family.  My brother is John Bruce, my father John Cameron, grandfather John Alexander, great grandfather Donald and great great grandfather John.

GMac78,

Thanks so much.  That is wonderful.  I can now place him still in Scotland in 1941.  That will narrow it down a bit for looking up passenger lists to Canada.

Glad to be of some help! Have you tried contacting Rebecca MacKay of the Raasay Heritage Trust? if not her contact details can be found here http://www.raasay.com/rhsbook.html

She lives in the island and is very knowledgeable on Raasay families, though I suspect your John may be difficult to pin down. Definitely worth a try though. All the best--G.

The 1841 census was
Piece: SCT1841/114 Place: Portree -Inverness-shire Enumeration District: 9
Civil Parish: Portree Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 9 Page: 7
Address: Mainish

I looked up Manish, Raasay and found Point Manish and Manish Island, (very small).  There is also Manish, Harris.  I have tried to look up the Enumeration District 9, Civic Parish Portree to see what island is in this district but haven't had any luck.  Does anyone have info on what places were in the 9 district?  I want to make sure that John McKenzie and Murdoch McLeod were on Raasay and not Harris.
