Searching for info about Emily Elizabeth Elley (nee Skeggs) 1895 to 1971
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 19:15 BST (UK) »
Hi. I have found that Emily's mother was Ada Elizabeth Elkins and that her father was James Thomas Skeggs. She was born in Acton.
On the 1911 census, she is living with her father in law to be, Reuben George Elley, 1866-1939, in Wandsworth. She married his son, Arthur Herbert Bennett Elley in 1918.
On the 1911 census, it says that Emily was Reuben's cousin but I cannot find a link between, her, her mother or her father and Reuben.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone has any information, as this is driving me mad!
Many thanks  :)

I don't know what census info you have

Reuben George Elley married 1891 to Kate Bennett
1891 finds them living in Wandsworth
RG12/455 FOLIO 58 PAGE 18
Reuben G Elley aged 26 Brick layer born Sydenham
Kate (nee Bennett) 26 born Bucks

Have you found a birth, was he born Elley?

So far can't find him on 1871/1881

Hi. I have his 1871 Richmond and 1881 Putney censuses. I have his siblings and Kate's siblings and also Emily Elizabeth's mother and father's siblings but just can't find a link between any of them that would make Reuben and Emily cousins. I suppose it could be a distant cousin and so I may just not have come across the link?
Thanks for replying.

Good idea about whether he was born an Elley ... I found his birth registration in the London births http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=lmabirths&h=6511653&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t38299739_p19243970785_kpidz0q3d19243970785z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgPLz0q3dpid
Interestingly, I can find no siblings on any of the censuses. Maybe he was adopted ... But this wouldn't tie in with the birth registration?

IF his parents were Reuben Elley and Sarah Hunt he should have been registered under Elley as they married in 1865, BUT I understand registration wasn't compulsary till about 1875, it was thought baptisms were as good as the registration, so he could have slipped the net, what about the relationship through Hunt family

17/09/1865 at St George The Martyr
Reuben Elley age full of Mint Street father Thomas Elley
to
Sarah Hunt age full of Red Cross St father Thomas

I have tried the hints, but am going to start over and see if I missed anything. Thank you. It's one of those little puzzles that will bug me until I can find the answer! It must be there somewhere ... Unless, it is a second or third cousin or something like that, rather than a first cousin. Thanks for your help. It's good to run ideas past people ... My husband has no idea what I am on about!!  :D

Happy hunting anyway

You might have to line up all the siblings and try to match them up with marriages but as you say, they might just be adopted cousins or umpty eight times  removed

Have fun
