The Galey graveyard records online only start in 1917 so won't show the burials of Patrick's parents who are not showing in the 1911 census. There is a death registration  in the index for an Edward Hayes b.c. 1822  Listowel District Jan Mar 1908 vol 5 page 315. This is the only Edward Hayes death showing in Listowel between 1901 and 1917 and would seem to fit.
For Catherine there are two possible death entries Listowel district  b.c.1824 Death Apr Jun 1901 Vol 5 page 293
or Jan Mar 1903 age 95 Vol 5 page 315 The first is the most likely given Catherine's age on the 1901 Census but you can't rely on ages given as people often didn't know their correct birth date.

If this is the correct family and it seems very likely there is a marriage for Edmund Hayes and Catherine Connell in Ballybunion parish on 1 Jul 1849 and you can see baptisms of some of Patrick's siblings on www.irishgenealogy.ie

Thanks so much!

I have seen a few of these records, but thought they did not match because we believed his father's name to be Charles.

However, PC Hayes did name his first son Edmund Charles Hayes and his first daughter Catherine!

We are not sure now...

Annclare, the record is from the Kerry Council.

I have no idea where the name Bridget Promety comes in, however it has been documented in the family tree for a long time.  Maybe an error from way back?

I am not sure how close the counties are in Ireland, in Alberta they are hundreds of miles apart!

Karen it may be worth your while posting on this site as somebody may be able to find present day descendants -that is if you are interested.

Ballybunion and Listowel are relatively near each other see Map .

Also you will see Beal just north of Ballybunion and Lisselton where Galey graveyard is.

This information has been a great help!

I have contacted the reach out Kerry people and hopefully I will hear something back

I have also been given a copy of the Galey Cemetary inscriptions from the good people at the Kerry Library.  Sadly, though no Hayes information.

Any ideas how to find out who might have the information as to who is buried at the Galey Cemetary? Are there local caretakers or church parishes that are in charge of upkeep?

Thanks for any help.

Karen

Galey graveyard is under the control of Kerry Local Authority, and they only seem to have records back to 1917.

Very few RC parishes kept records of death/burials.

Update - there are two Galey graveyards - Old and New, which seem to be adjacent. Suspect that the records only relate to the 'New' one...

Thanks Shane.

I have a letter stating that PC Hayes was buried with his parents in Galey Cemetary.  He was buried in 1930, and there are no records I can find when his parents were buried.

I wonder in the old or the new?

Another question to be answered.

I think the graveyard is associated with a very old church - possibly Church of Ireland. The name of the Civil/Church of Ireland parish where the graveyard is located is Galey.  (The RC parish is Listowel)

The Church was disused by the 1830s and the CofI parish was part of a Union with Aghavallin parish, which is just to the north. Like many old cemeteries CofI and RC burials could still have taken place there after the church closed.

You can see the grave yard and church ruins on the OSI maps..
