Finding Location of an Abbey - Solved!

Hi there,

My great-grandfather used to do watercolours and we still have a few.  One one of them is ruins and on the back is written what looks to be like the following

Imtion Abbey

Any ideas what or where this may be?

And what a truly beautiful Abbey Tintern is..................on an autumn day.....sun shining ...........shafts of light falling through the stone arches of the long gone windows.........breathtaking.

You could try contacting English Heritage or the National Trust, they may be able to help.

Hi Karen,

The writing looks like Imtton .....but that doesn't help you...sorry!

One other thought, the other pictures you have, do you know where they were painted? Any clues to if he had a particular favourite county/area that he liked to paint?

That might help narrow down your search.

Hi Tabitha,

Thanks for the tip.  One of the pictures is of Conwy Castle.  Thomas, who painted them was a butler for someone.  He was originally from Surrey.  At some point he was at Conwy Castle and then he's met and married in Ireland and then in 1910 came to Canada.   Whoever he worked for I believe that is how he got to these places.  He died in 1921 so no one was able to ask him questions.  The last place I have him in living/working at is Lisselan Estate in Clonakilty, Co. Cork before he came to Canada.

There are some abbey ruins near Clonakilty called Timoleague

Again I can't find anything that looks like the writing on the back of your picture, sorry.
