Uniform and cap badge identification
« on: Sunday 15 July 12 05:33 BST (UK) »
Dear members,  I've attached a photo of a man who I believe is my grandad, Walter Charles Bell, who was in the Royal Fusilliers in WWI (I believe the City of London Regiment). Can anyone confirm that this is indeed a Royal Fusilliers uniform/badge?

Thank you so much.

Your photo did not come through.  Attached is a photograph of my grandfather, Private Peter Donaldson, 25th Batallion, Royal Fusiliers, who served mainly in German East Africa during the First World War.  He survived.

Thanks barryd for posting your grandad's photo. I'm having awful trouble trying to upload mine. Will keep trying. Be grateful if you could take a look once I succeed.

regards.

Peter's badge has a "flame" on top and a round ball on the bottom. In your photograph the cap badge  is more "spiky" and I cannot see the round ball on your soldier's cap. Same cap, but not a definite match on the badge. I am not an expert on cap badges so suggest more research on the Internet.

have a look here www.britishbadge.co.uk you should find it among these , it may also help if you post the pic on restoration board and ask for a clean up only with it being out of focus it,s an awful job working out what regt it is but no doubt one of the experts will get it easily enough .

Thank you for your kind advice. I checked the British badges site as you suggested but unfortunately I couldn't find a match. So I have sent it off for restoration. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my post.

Regards.

Go back to the link that Trevor gave you, go to Infantry Regiments, , Page 2 then scroll down to badge 8
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, I think it is a possibility, however how sure are you that this soldier is ww1?
Because this particular badge was a later pattern than ww1 up to 1939.
My guess is based on the outline and lower scroll of the badge because the detail is totally absent
James

ps The restorers do an excellent  job on restoration photos, but they can't restore detail that isn't there

Good evening,

He is possibly in the Bedfordshires if it's WW1, pre Beds & Herts.
