Dear All

I am trying to locate the building in London where you go to get BMD certificates. I know it is not Somerset House, but I honestly cannot remember  :-\where I visited in 2006. Way back then upon entering the building there were shelves upon shelves that held big red books listing records. Then you could go to the counter and order certificates there and then.

Can anybody assist me pls??

Thanks.

Hi

The General Register Office is in Southport Lancashire now, you can order certificates online for 9.25 GBP

Thank you for your reply Andy...

Oh that is a shame as I was intending to visit today.

Mighty good job I checked 1st, eh?

Is that how much certs are now? Extortionate!!

There was something enjoyable about visiting the registry office & browsing through all the books.. :)

The place that you used to visit was called the Family Record Centre which was based in Islington.

It became rather redundant when so many of us use the internet to do the same job from the comfort of our own homes. ;D

You are correct it was lovely getting each of the red books down off the shelves, and afterwards you didn't need to do any exercises for the rest of the week (they were flippin' heavy!)

A poor substitute but you can access the GRO microfiche at the British Library or Westminster Archives, if you're making a trip into London.

I had to laugh at this Dawn,as you say a poor substitute.

I've never got the same pleasure sticking a microfiche into a machine, like you did when pulling those incredibly heavy red books off the shelves at the FRC ;D ;D ;D

Spose it's called progress?

Ancestery/FindMyPast/The Genealogist/GenesRU etc all had to scan and transcribe from something Nick.  I expect they were leased out for huge sums
Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Didn't I read that they have been locked away in the vaults at Kew?

Dawn may put us right on that one  ;D
