Heaslip/Haslip, Joseph & wife Brown, Margaret
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 06:19 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find our family in Ireland. Out of nine children born in the US only one birth certificate lists a place of birth for the parents - Cavan. Joseph (b.abt 1832) & Margaret (b. abt May 1840) used the Haslip spelling when they settled in Connecticut but I don't know the spelling in Ireland; Griffith's Valuation has many Heaslips listed in Co. Cavan so I see that as a poss. starting point. In addition I know that Joseph & Margaret were Catholic. I have had no success finding them emigrating but I did find an entry on a baptismal certif that mentions a sponsor John Brown which might have been a relative of Margaret.  Where do I go from here with so little information?  I would be grateful for any help.   Alexandra

Hi there,

Did Joseph Heaslip and Margaret brown marry in Conneticut ?

If so when ?

Did you get their marriage cert to get their parents names ?

Do you have a rough idea of when they emmigrated ?

Do you have them on any US Census ?

What were the names of their children, in order, as this can help with parents names !

Tara

Good questions. I do not know when they married, in the US or Ireland. I have found Margaret & Joseph in 1870, but he died in 1877. The whole family minus Joseph is in 1880. No useful info on his death certif. Can't find an obit. No useful info on her death certif or obit. I have all her census records up until her death. No useful info. Can't find any likely immigration records. Their children were born between 1861 & 1877. There could have been one before 1861, but I don't think so based on birth certifs that were noted, "first child", "second child" etc. (although not always accurate). Children's names: Thomas H, Mary, Theresa, Joseph Francis, John A, James Arthur, William Vincent, Unnamed baby & Samuel Christopher. Thank you, Tara.  Alexandra

Anticipating your next question--- there could be relatives living in the US that came over at some point. Pockets lived in Saratoga & Troy, New York as well as Vermont, but I have not been able to find a connection yet. Am working on that. Alexandra

Hi Alexandra

Looking at Griffiths Valuation there are quite a few Heaslip (& variations) on it in Cavan -

it's a shame that you haven't been able to track emmigration records or their marriage cert / I can't say that I can see any good matches either.

Sorry

Tara

Well, I didn't think it would be easy. I've been searching for a long time.

I just keep hoping a close relative will tap into one of these chats and discover the relationship somehow.
