Identity of Elizabeth Hutchcraft
« on: Wednesday 18 July 12 15:57 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the maiden name of my 3rd Great Grandmother Elizabeth Hutchcraft, I can only find records of her after she was married. She was born about 1860 in Fletton according to census records. The 1911 census says she married her husband Joseph Hutchcraft in 1883. Joseph was actually living in Fletton village in the 1881 census but was born in Ramsey and lived there after marriage, so I'm guessing it was during his stay there that he met Elizabeth. Unfortunately even after looking through each record I can't find a suitable Elizabeth in Fletton.

I'm also concerned that I can't find a marriage certificate for a Joseph Hutchcraft in 1883 of any kind.

Is there anything that I could do to make the search easier?

I cannot see a marriage - it is possible its missed off the indexes - this does happen.

So you could either

1. Browse the marriage index pages on pay sites like ancestry or findmypast for it, or

2. Buy the birth certificate for one of their childen and this should reveal the mothers maiden name

( but i'd wait to see if any other forum members first have any indexes that may contain them)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

You might need to widen the date range and area for the marriage.

There is a birth registration (probably  ::)) for the oldest child

Two out of the three censuses showing Elizabeth give her POB as Denton, Huntingdonshire

I think Denton & Fletton have 'moved around' a bit over the years.

According to genuki's list of places and registration districts

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/index.html

They both seem to have been in Huntingdonshire & Northamptonshire, and since 1974 have registered to Cambridge

Looks like you'll need some fairly serious lateral thinking on this one   :o ::)

Linda

Added - it gets worse.  There seems to be a Denton in Huntingdonshire and one in Northamptonshire in the late 1800s

Oh wow, thanks a lot for all your help! I appreciate you all taking the time to look into this mystery. I was just about to order a birth certificate so this has saved me some money.

Again, thank you, this has been really helpful.
