Methodist (?) birth of Mary Ross
« on: Wednesday 18 July 12 19:30 BST (UK) »
Trying to track ancestry of above named who married Robert Cosgrove, RIC, in Sligo in 1882.  She was supposedly the dau of a Methodist Minister so I guess they married at the Methodist church in Wine Street, Sligo.  But I also understand her parents farmed so perhaps her father was a lay preacher?

Would the RIC station in Sligo at that time have been where the modern Garda station is on Pearse Road?

Thanks

Cotter (London/Cornwall), Ker (Edinburgh/Roxburgh), Martyn (Cornwall), Orpen/Palmer (Co. Kerry), Pryn (Cornwall), Garnett/Radcliff (Co. Meath),
Wilkie (Roxburgh)

Do you have a marriage cert for Mary and Robert ?

that should include place of marriage, father's occupation, residences for the bride and groom etc...

The Methodist Church Theological College at Edgehill in Belfast has a historical section which has details of most if not all Methodist Ministers who served in Ireland. They may be able to provide information on whether the bride’s father was a Minister. Usually they have some details of his family too. See: http://www.edgehillcollege.org/Wesley%20Historical%20Society

in case you dont have  a cert yet - here's a probable cross-match from the BMD Index :

  Name: Mary Ross
  Registration district:   Sligo
  Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year:   Jul - Sep 1882
  Volume : 2 / Page: 245

a matching entry appears for a    Robert Cosgrove

for notes on ordering a cert see :

Hi

I take it this is the family in 1901

cosgrove 1901 census

and 1911

cosgrove 1911 census

None of the few Ross' on the 1901 census in Sligo are listed as Methodist's though !

There were however Ross' who were Methodists in Glencar Leitrim which is quite literally on the Sligo / Leitrim border

If you get the marriage cert and its says that her father's name was Robert I am sure this is her family !

ross glencar 1901

If I'm correct the Mary aged 81 on it is Mary's Ross Cosgrove's mother ie widow of Robert Ross

The Robert Ross on the census then would have been Mary Ross Cosgrove's brother.

This is the Robert Ross that I think is Mary's father on Griffiths Valuation

Mary's father was Francis Ross, listed as a farmer.
