Adoption in 1900. Ernest Williams
« on: Wednesday 18 July 12 20:22 BST (UK) »
I know there were no official records until 1927, but wondered what info I can get. Ernest Williams b.7/8/1898 in Lincoln, had on his birth cert mother: Kate Williams (nee Brown) & father: Herbert Williams, although information from the family says he wasnt the real father. In the 1901 census he was listed as adopted & living in Washbrook, Suffolk with Arthur Clarke & his wife Betsey. In the 1911 census he was still with Arthur, although Betsey had died, living in Ipswich. He didn't marry until 1934 in Colchester and there was no father listed on his marriage cert. Is there any way of finding out who his real father was as he (Ernest) always just said he was the black sheep of the family. There was never any contact with Kate, but was told she had married again and had more children. Any help would be appreciated.

This couple appear to have still been together in 1911 and living in Grantham. :)

They were in Newark (Notts) in 1901 I think, but Herbert appears as Albert.

Kate was in Lincoln in 1891 I think.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

1901 they appear together - lodging at a pub ( Herbert entered as Albert) they had a 7 year old son? Arthur with them

Wonder if Arthur Clarke and betsey are related to them in any way???

There are also some Browns also  lodging at the pub in 1901

Thanks. I knew Herbert & Kate were married but dont know why they shipped off Ernest. Perhaps she'd had an affair, who knows? I will look into it to see if she was related to any of the Clarkes, as Betsey was born in Holbeck, Lincs.
