Cornwall: Emanuel BLIGHT, born c1845
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 22:02 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Emanuel BLIGHT, born c1845, was in trouble 3 times with the law, 28/06/1859, 04/03/1860 and 03/07/1860, the latter of which saw him being sentenced to 4 years penal servitude at Bodmin Quarter Sessions.   He was held mostly at Parkhurst Prison and then transferred to Dartmoor Prison on 30/03/1864.

And that is as much about him that I have managed to research!!!

Can anyone help?

Thank you,

BAC3

Thanks Victor,

The Cornwall FHS require an open-ended research project to find Emanuel BLIGHT, which could prove expensive based on my own frustrated investigations.   Sadly, as he is only one of many I am researching for a PhD, mature Postgraduate, fixed income (!!), I may put him the pending tray.

For now,

Hi BAC3
Does this help you at all?
The Royal Cornwall Gazette, Falmouth Packet & General Advertiser - 1 July 1859

Emanuel Blight, 15, pleaded GUILTY of having broken into the dwelling house of William Rodda, at Crowan, on 6 May, and stolen the sum of 1s 8d, a watch chain, and a quantity of buttons, the property of the said William Rodda.

Thank You Osprey,

I had retrieved this entry earlier but discarded him as I though it referred to a Lieutenant Emanuel BLIGHT born in 1793.

Now I am having second thoughts......if he died in September1864 then he should not have been an inmate at Dartmoor Prison, as he was due for release on 02/07/1864.   Possibly he was hospitalised and retained for a long period.   Now the problem of course is how do I find the appropriate records for deaths in Dartmoor Prison??

Brickwalls!!!

Hello Dazey,

I scoured the whole of the 19th Century British Library Newspapers and came across two entries for him, the one you quote and an earlier publication on 01/07/1859.  At least the articles prove he was "real"
as I am so puzzled as to the absolute lack of detail for him.

You will note above the possible death in 1864, which I suppose is clutching at straws, but I will persevere down that particular track!!

For now,

just been having a look around and yes, the death does refer to the Lieutenant born in 1790. He's on the 1861 census and notices of his death are in the newspaper archive.

But where is the "incorrigible young rogue"? Not my phrase, but in the Royal Cornwall Gazette.
