Researchers, George Dehon found wondering the streets travelling from NZ. Please see attached newspaper article.

Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931), Thursday 7 January 1897, page 6

Any thoughts ? I don't recall a George Dehon. Anyone able to assist ?

Happy Easter :)

Hi Lu, thanks so much :)

I thought with Anzac Day approaching, I would post a photograph of, Edward Vincent Dehon b.1913 unfortunately passing away at the age of 27 on service in 1941 in Syria.

Hi again Lee

Mmm yes  ... "George" DEHON - otherwise known as Louis George / George Louis / George Lewis / DEHON.   ;)

Born Hokitika, New Zealand, 30 August 1880 - his birth registration only records the forename, "Louis".

Have only ever found NZ baptisms for siblings Katherine, (shown as Catherine - bapt. 12 January 1883), Peter, and Amelia - Roman Catholic Parish of Hokitika-Ross, so can't be sure when the name "George" was added.

He was though certainly known as Louis George DEHON by 1892 when bundled off to the Burnham Industrial School in Christchurch, Canterbury.  ::)

Here's the link to the article >

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

"West Coast Times" - 25 November 1892

.... A little waif named Louis George DEHON, aged 12 ....

Interesting ?   ;D

On his voyage to Sydney by the "Talune" (arrived 7 January 1897), I see he is listed as a "Mr G. DEHON", a steerage passenger.

It seems that his visit was a short one.   :D

On the NZ Immigration Passenger Lists (at FamilySearch), there is a "Mastr. (Master) DEHON" - listed as a child between 1 & 14 years - described as being of "French" origin, - on the return voyage of the "Talune" to NZ ports.    Master DEHON's destination was Lyttelton in Canterbury province (- the same area in which the Burnham Industrial school was located).  After calling at various NZ ports, the "Talune" reached Lyttelton about 16 January (1897).

Ideally, (and all going well), Louis George was due for release from the Industrial school age at 15 (c. 1895).   It maybe though that he was "apprenticed" or "bonded" to an employer in Christchurch ?    Perhaps he did a "runner" from NZ ?? (not unusual for anyone related to clan HEASMAN  ;D).   After all he did use the name "George"  ... and he was back in Sydney the following year masquerading as "Louis" DEHON.

Looks like he may have returned to NZ again, later.   Paperspast has two items - "Grey River Argus" (Westland) - 6 February 1902, notice of unclaimed letters from places beyond the Colony, held at Greymouth Post Office - for G. Louis DEHON ... and, "Evening Post" (Wellington) - 7 July 1903 - page 4, where a claim for wages was made to the Court, Louis DEHON v. Patrick DWYER (with judgment in favour of the defendant).

There was never a dull moment with this lot, was there ?   :D

hi everyone - especially those to whom I might be related.
I am also descended from a Dehon - John born in about 1885 in Hokitika, New Zealand. He moved to Australia and eventually changed his name to Jack Dean - apparently to stop his association with Louis George Dehon I have heard. My grandmother wasn't married to Dehon - as he had a wife and several other children apart from his 2 with Mum and her younger brother. I've been working on the family tree for years and only recently discovered the association. They all lived (happily?) together at 31 White Street Leichhardt NSW at around the same time, and there are several Dehons listed at that address if you are missing any key evidence. (found in census and street directories of the 1920-30s). good luck in your searches - i'd love to hear from any you if you have more info - especially photographs which i haven't been able to trace as yet.
