5 Denmark Avenue/Hill
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 01:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All.
Would anyone be able to tell me if No 5 Denmark Hill/Avenue, Wimbledon, Surrey, is still standing. In the 1901 census it was the residence of the Brodie family, John Lamont Brodie was a famous Artist, who died circa 1897 if the house is still standing it might have a blue plaque. I would like to have a photograph of the house if possible, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Belfast beau.

Hi

Have you tried Google maps because that will take you down to a photograph at street level of all the houses in te street? Just put the address into Google and it will take you to Google maps and then zoom down.

You can also search the English Heritage website on blue plaques in London. It holds an index of plaques.

5 Denmark Avenue is still there ,it's postcode is SW19 4HF.

As Valda says, Google it and you may also get to see houses for sale there,so it'll give you an idea of the types of houses and how much they cost!

Hi Valda and Carol.
Took your suggestions to google, the area seems to be have been redeveloped. Number 1/3 is a branch of Barkley's Bank, Superdrug is at 4a.The property next door to Superdrug is Snappy Snaps and they are part of Butterfly Walk which looks like a shopping mall. The next address for Denmark hill is in the twenties. Thanks for your input at least now I know that if I'm to get the photo I want, it will have to come from archive footage. Again thank you for your help and if you have any other suggestions please feel free to post. Best wishes, Belfast beau.

Hi Valda.
Sorry, it seems I've been leading you all to the wrong address. Its  Denmark Avenue but Lavender House, is number 5  Wimbledon, Surrey.  I've again tried Google maps with no success, as I've been unable to zoom in on Number 5. Its not an age thing just lack of knowledge. Belfast beau.

Hi

It is unlikely the house has retained its original name, or its name at the time of the turn of the C19th/C20th. The avenue may or may not have been renumbered since 1901. One side of the avenue seems to have original houses and the other side has more modern buildings. The pictures from Google show it is a residential street. Merton Archives will be able to confirm whether the original house is still standing and they may hold older photographs of the avenue.

The Wimbledon Society 1995 News letter - one of the "production" team lived at 5 Denmark Avenue (at end of letter).
Haven't seen that name credited on recent issues but might be worth contacting the Society?
